Our sessions takes place on Wednesdays, at 6:30 pm in the parish hall. Please mark your calendar for our first of seven series Bible Studies on Wednesday, Sep. 24. Its theme is Christianity, the first thousand years. From the Crucifixion to the coming of the Crusades, this study traces the rise of one of the world’s great religions. We will explore the intertwined fates of the Roman Empire and the faith it persecuted, then later adopted. Theologians will reveal how the New Testament was shaped, how pagan festivals were transformed into Christian holidays, and how modern discoveries shed new light on the dawn of Christianity. The next dates for the bible study are: Oct. 1; Oct. 15 Oct. 22; Oct. 29; Nov. 12; Nov. 19, 2008 The themes of the following Bible studies are: Christianity, the second thousand years. This study includes a panoramic journey through ten centuries of belief and conflict; it chronicles not just the events and personalities that left indelible marks on the landscape of faith, but also the forces behind them. From the Crusades and the Reformation to the sweeping changes of Vatican II Council, each episode is illuminated through extensive use of historical documents, commentary from renowned scholars, and video clips from the sites where history was made. Jesus: His life, lost years and death. Incredibly, the Bible says almost nothing about Jesus from the time of His birth until nearly thirty years later. These three decades, the major portion of His life, have been called by scholars the “lost years.” Learn intriguing theories of why the Bible is silent about those missing decades. The Last Supper. Few moments in the Bible hold more significance than Jesus’ last supper in Jerusalem. Still, modern scholars continue to debate the specifics. Who attended the supper? What did they discuss? And what of the true role of Judas? Join this study in an exploration of Jesus’ final hours on earth. Paul the Apostle. With the exception of Jesus of Nazareth, St. Paul is the single most important figure in the history of Christianity, transforming from its bitterest foe to its most ardent advocate. The Apocalypse, part I. Watch a video of the ancient Megiddio – thought to be the site of the biblical Armageddon – and uncover answers about the apocalyptic prophesies in this revealing look at the puzzling and powerful story of the Book of Revelation. The Apocalypse, the puzzle of Revelation - part II. The book’s fiery passages are filled with cryptic numbers, strange beasts, and a final showdown between good and evil that ends in the cataclysmic confrontation known as Armageddon. From the Old Testament prophets to Nostradamus and beyond, these apocalyptic visions have long intrigued mystics, scholars, and the faithful alike. Who was the real author of the book, and what do its grim prophecies foretell? What is the meaning of the Seven Seals, the Four Horsemen, and the mystery of the souls who reach the Kingdom of God? Join our study to find out! |
