Anointing of the Sick

Those facing a very serious illness are afforded a most special sacrament in the Anointing of the Sick. This is meant for anyone facing a sudden or chronic illness, surgery, or disturbance of health -- physically, mentally or spiritually.

Although this sacrament has traditionally been celebrated in a person’s last moments, earning the name “Last Rites”, it is actually intended to be celebrated whenever a person is seriously ill. Indeed, one should not wait until the last minute to seek a priest, for two reasons:

• It is highly desired that the person receiving the sacrament be able to understand and participate in the celebration of God’s love and grace. We seek healing not only in our bodies but, most importantly, for our spirits and minds to remain strong and faithful during times of challenge.

• We want to make sure that a priest is available when this sacrament might be needed, so it is best to try to arrange a time prior to a last-minute call, to ensure that everything possible can be done to help someone in need. While priests will do their best to assist in emergencies, it is best to make prior arrangements if there is a long-term illness or debilitating condition.

The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick also is celebrated occasionally in a communal service during the year.
